Automakers across the board are turning their heads, and their autos, towards greater in-vehicle connectivity. Toyota is no different. The Japan-based company has come out with various infotainment systems that connect to your iPod, iPhone, or Android device. Unlike others, however, Toyota is taking things a step further.

Just recently, company officials announced that you can now control a Toyota navigation system with your Nintendo DS...if you live in Japan that is. Considering the popularity of gaming overseas, Avondale Toyota isn't too surprised the automaker decided to premier its new technology there first.

More specifically, Nintendo DS users who also drive a new Toyota vehicle can purchase a game card from their local Toyota dealership. This software, the Kuruma de DS game card, works in tandem with Bluetooth and allows users to display a speedometer on the DS, input destinations into the DS, and use the DS to broadcast audio through the car's stereo system.

At this point in time, you might be wondering how safe this technology is. After all, drivers could easily become distracted by fiddling with their Nintendo DS at the wheel. That's why Toyota has designed the program to be used only by passengers and warns drivers not to use it themselves.
